ONLINE PARISH NOTES

SUNDAY 31 AUGUST 2014

Jesus and Peter

FROM THE RECTOR

Psychologically, for many of us, the Labor Day weekend marks the transition from the summer holiday season to the beginning of another program year in the Church, and another academic year in schools and universities. For those of us who are in town this weekend, coming to Mass on Sunday affords a good opportunity to give thanks for the blessings of the summer that is almost past, and to pray for guidance in our endeavors in the months that lie ahead.

In addition, the proper readings and prayers of the Mass on Labor Day itself honor and pray for all who work: especially for full employment, just wages, and safe working conditions. It being the first Monday of the month, also, we shall remember the departed of the parish whose year’s mind falls during September. If you have any other departed loved ones or friends whom you would like remembered, please let me know.  – Fr. John D. Alexander

Wednesday Afternoon Teas – We are excited to begin offering tea and other refreshments in the Narthex on Wednesday afternoons at 4pm. We plan to get this experimental initiative started by mid-September. This is a great opportunity to open the church to students and passersby, offer hospitality, and enjoy one another’s company. Any parishioners interested in helping out (for example, by bringing baked goods, cookies, or cupcakes) are invited to contact Fr. Sawicky. In any case, drop by, have a cup of tea and say hello! We’ll pack up in time for Evening Prayer at 5:30.

SUNDAY 24 AUGUST 2014

Saint Bartholomew

FROM THE RECTOR

During the "Green Season" (also known as "Ordinary Time") of Sundays after Pentecost, the Prayer Book gives us permission to celebrate Saints Days when they fall on a Sunday. (During other liturgical seasons such as Lent and Eastertide, Saints Days falling on a Sunday are transferred to the first available weekday.) This Sunday, August 24, is the Feast of Saint Bartholomew the Apostle, so we shall be commemorating him at the 10 am Mass -- wearing red vestments in observance of his martyrdom, and using the readings and prayers appointed for his feast day. (We shall use the normal propers of the Sunday (Proper 16, Year A) at the 8 am Mass.) How does a first-century Apostle such as Bartholomew speak to our world today? That is the question we shall be exploring this Sunday as we keep his feast. Please join us. -- Fr. John D. Alexander

SUNDAY 17 AUGUST 2014

Emblem of the Chaldean Catholic Patriarchate

FROM THE RECTOR

Religious leaders in the United States, including the National Conference of Catholic Bishops and the Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church, have called on people of faith to observe this Sunday, August 17, as a day of prayer for persecuted Christians and religious minorities in Iraq and elsewhere. Communities of Christians have existed in what is today Syria and Iraq since the earliest spread of the Gospel in the first century AD. They are now faced with genocide at the hands of Islamist extremists (whose teachings and practices are a distortion and perversion of the authentic teachings of Islam). Both Masses at S. Stephen’s this Sunday will be offered with special intentions for their safety and protection. Please join us and show your solidarity with persecuted Iraqi Christians by your prayers and presence. – Fr. John D. Alexander
