PARISH NOTES
Sunday 2 October 2016

Jacob's Dream, Manuscript Illustration
World Chronicle of Rudolph von Elms, c. 1300

FROM THE RECTOR

By an ancient English law, it is permitted to celebrate the Anniversary of the Dedication of a Church on the first Sunday of October. The most usual reason for doing so is that many churches in England are so old no record exists of what day of the year they were actually dedicated and consecrated. In our case, it is fitting because the actual anniversary of our church building's consecration in 1862 often falls during Lent, when the appointed Sundays cannot be displaced.

It is even more fitting to welcome the Schola Cantorum to begin a new season of Solemn High Masses on this Feast of the Dedication: a splendid way to offer praise and thanks to Almighty God for the gift of this building set apart for worship and prayer. As Jacob put it in the appointed Old Testament reading: "How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven!"
-- Fr. John D. Alexander

Parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus

FROM THE RECTOR

It's been a long time since the last Sunday when the full Schola Cantorum sang at a Sunday Mass on May 29th. We are looking forward with great anticipation to their return next Sunday on October 2nd. In the meantime, at Coffee Hour this Sunday -- hosted by the Our Lady of Providence Ward of the Society of Mary -- James Busby will lead us in practicing a new (old) congregational sung setting of the Nicene Creed (from the Missa de Angelis). This setting of the Creed was in use many years ago at S. Stephen's and it's time to reintroduce it. This will be fun. Please join us if you're able. -- Fr. John D. Alexander

Marinus Van Reymerswaele, Parable of the Unjust Steward, c. 1540
Kunsthistorisch Museum, Vienna
FROM THE RECTOR

The Presidential election is now less than two months away. It is forbidden by law -- under penalty of losing our tax-exempt status! -- for churches to endorse particular candidates or parties in an election, or for the clergy to do so from the pulpit or in church-sponsored communications. That is probably just as well. But we can pray for our country, and for all who will vote on November 8th. We can ask God to illuminate our consciences so that we may exercise our own vote responsibly -- remembering that we are ultimately accountable to God for all such decisions we make in the public square as well as in our private lives. If you are feeling anxious about this election, then come to Mass regularly to seek God's guidance and peace. -- Fr. John D. Alexander

Parable of the Lost Coin
(After an engraving by John Everett Millais)

FROM THE RECTOR

Imagine discovering several hours before you're due to go to the airport to catch an international flight that your passport is not where you thought it was. You search for it frantically, and just as you're about to give up in despair, it turns up in the last place you think to look. If you've had this experience -- as I have -- you can begin to identify with the feelings of the woman in this Sunday's Gospel who exclaims to her friends and neighbors, "Rejoice with me, for I have found the coin which was lost." Our Lord tells the parable of the Lost Sheep and the Lost Coin to indicate the intensity of the rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents. But it also signifies our rejoicing on earth when we discover (or rediscover) the joy of fellowship with Christ and one another in his Church. -- Fr. John D. Alexander

"The Apostle Onesimus"
Saint Petka Chapel, Belgrade

FROM THE RECTOR

The Epistle reading in this Sunday's Mass comprises Saint Paul's shortest writing in the New Testament: the Letter to Philemon. Its 25 verses contain only 335 words in the original Greek text. Paul writes to Philemon, a leader of the Church at Colossae, on behalf of Onesimus, who appears to be a runaway slave whom Paul has baptized. Paul appeals to Philemon to receive Onesimus back, "no longer as a slave but more than a slave, as a beloved brother." This letter describes the transformation of social relationships in Christ: a crucial topic for the Church today no less than in Paul's time. -- Fr. John D. Alexander
