FROM THE RECTOR

This Sunday's Scripture readings highlight the theme of prophets sent by God to speak his Word to the people. The Old Testament prophet Jeremiah presents a test of the authenticity of those who claim to be prophets: "As for the prophet who prophesies peace, when the word of that prophet comes to pass, then it shall be known that the LORD has truly sent the prophet." In the Gospel reading, commissioning his disciples to go forth and preach, Jesus affirms his presence in and with those whom he sends: "He who receives you receives me, and he who received me receives him who sent me." Together, these readings challenge us to examine with a discerning eye how we receive and relate to those sent to us in the Name of God. -- Fr. John D. Alexander

This week we resume the Sundays of "the green season," also known (somewhat inaccurately) as "Ordinary Time." We have completed the annual cycle of Advent, Christmas, Epiphany, Lent, Easter, and Pentecost; the task now is to live into the mysteries we have commemorated. The color green (used for the vestments and hangings at Mass) symbolizes growth and fecundity in the Christian life. This Sunday also marks two important annual milestones in our life together: Sunday School Recognition, and the Annual Parish Barbecue. We look forward to seeing you there. -- Fr. John D. Alexander

Memorial Service at First Baptist – At 6:30 p.m. this Thursday, June 29, the First Baptist Church, 75 North Main Street, Providence, is hosting a memorial event for the 1,500 people who have died from opioid overdose. Sponsored by Faith Infused Recovery Efforts (FIRE), this event is entitled “United: An Evening of Remembrance and Hope.” All churches in the state have been invited to ring their bells at 8 p.m. to mark a three-minute moment of silence. Corpus Christi Sunday marks the end of the 2016-2017 choir season at S. Stephen's with the annual celebration of our Lord's real presence in the Sacrament of his Body and Blood, featuring a Eucharistic Procession and Benediction at the conclusion of the 10 a.m. Mass. During the Coffee Hour following we shall be hosting a farewell gathering for Cory MacLean, who will be leaving her position as Parish Administrator later in the summer. The biblically-based doctrine of the Holy Trinity teaches that the mystery at the heart of reality is communion. The three divine Persons of the Godhead each have a distinctive identity yet are united in relations of mutual love; and this love sets the pattern for all creation. As human beings we each have our distinct identity as individuals yet find the fulfillment of our being in loving relations of mutuality and reciprocity. In other words, we are made for life in community, precisely because we have been created in the image of the Triune God. Come join in the Church's celebration of this great mystery on Trinity Sunday. -- Fr. John D. Alexander

The Day of Pentecost marks the "birthday of the Church," when the Holy Spirit descended in tongues of flame alighting on the apostles and equipping them for their mission to the world. It is one of the principal holy days of the Church Calendar, a time of great rejoicing, and an opportunity to pray for the renewal of the Holy Spirit's gifts in our own lives. -- Fr. John D. Society of St. Margaret Open House – The Sisters of St. Margaret invite the parish of S. Stephens for an Open House at their campus in Duxbury.
