PARISH NOTES
Sunday 30 September 2018

Jacob de Wit, Moses and the Seventy Elders (1727)
Royal Palace, Amsterdam, Netherlands

FROM THE RECTOR

In this Sunday’s Gospel, Our Lord issues some exhortations that are disturbing at first glance. “If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off … If your foot causes you to sin, cut if off … If your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out …” These commands fall into the literary category of hyperbole: exaggerations for effect that are not meant to be taken literally. The Church has never endorsed self-mutilation. Their deeper meaning comes into focus when we consider the biblical symbolism of hands, feet, and eyes—particularly in the Psalms and other poetic books of Scripture. Our hands signify our acts and deeds. Our feet signify the ways in which we walk. And our eyes signify the sights, images, ideas, and goals that give our lives purpose and direction. Hands, feet, and eyes thus sum up the total interaction of our inner person with the outside world. In this passage, Jesus reminds us of our need to consecrate all that we are and do—the works of our hands, the paths in which we walk, the vision we set before our imagination—to the service of God’s kingdom. Letting go of habits that lead us astray and cause us to stumble can be difficult and painful: an impossible task if we rely on ourselves alone. But all things are possible with God—especially in and through the Body into which he calls us as members of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. – Fr. John D. Alexander

Benjamin West, Christ Showing a Little Child, 1790, Private Collection

FROM THE RECTOR

“Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me …” (Mark 9:37). A great deal of sentimental nonsense has been preached over the years about Jesus’ attitude to children. The critical consideration seems not to have been children’s alleged simplicity or innocence, but their complete lack of social standing and hence their inability to reciprocate gifts and favors. To “receive a child” in Jesus’ name is to show kindness or hospitality with no hope of profit, reward, recognition, or gain. In response to the apostles’ vying for earthly greatness, Jesus tells us in this Sunday’s Gospel that in receiving such little children we receive not only Jesus himself but the Father who sent him. Such service with no desire for recognition or reward will be more than recognized and rewarded by God himself, in this world or the next. – Fr. John D. Alexander

FROM THE RECTOR

A key topic in Christian theology sometimes goes under the heading of “the Person and Work of Jesus Christ” – i.e. who Jesus is, and what he does. The technical terms are “Christology,” the theology of Christ, and “Soteriology,” the theology of salvation. In this Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus asks his disciples, “Who do you say that I am?” Peter answers: “You are the Christ.” But when Jesus explains the sufferings that he must undergo, Peter protests. He gets the “Who Jesus is” question right, but he misses the “What Jesus does” question completely. To be fully Christian, we need to understand to the best of our ability not only who Jesus is and what he does, but also how we may respond to his call: “If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.” – Fr. John D. Alexander

PARISH NOTES
Sunday 9 September 2018

Jesus Healing a Deaf-Mute. Ottheinrich Bible (c. 1430). Bavarian State Library. Munich, Germany.

FROM THE RECTOR

In this Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus fulfills prophecy: “Then … [shall] the ears of the deaf [be] unstopped; … and the tongue of the dumb sing for joy” (Isaiah 35:5-6). Inhabitants of the Gentile region known as the Decapolis bring to Jesus a deaf and mute man, beseeching him to lay his hand upon him. But Jesus goes several steps further. Taking the man aside, he puts his fingers in his ears, spits and touches his tongue, looks up to heaven, heaves a deep sigh, and commands: “Ephatha: Be opened!” Notable is the sheer physicality of the healing. Speaking and acting with the authority of God, Jesus nonetheless engages the man in the fullness of their shared corporeality in a way that the more sensitive souls among us might find gross and disgusting. What then does this episode have to teach us about how Jesus engages with the members of his Body, the Church, to unstop our ears and release our tongues? Join us this Sunday as we explore this question in depth. – Fr. John D. Alexander
