A WORD OF WELCOME

Welcome to Saint Stephen’s – S. Stephen’s Church is in the midst of Brown University and serves the communities of the East Side of Providence, North Providence, East Providence, and beyond. It is a parish of the Diocese of Rhode Island in the Episcopal Church in the worldwide Anglican Communion. The Anglo-Catholic tradition informs and shapes our life together. We are a diverse community uniting all sorts and conditions in the worship of Our Lord Jesus Christ and aim to offer up the best we have in liturgy, music, preaching, teaching, fellowship, and service.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Virtual Offices and Masses – To access and view the LIVE (and archived) services going forward, please visit the parish Facebook page here. To access accompanying Daily Office and Low Mass readings and resources (as well as archived services), please visit the parish website sermon page here.

Virtual Coffee Hour – This Sunday, 29 March, we will be hosting our first virtual coffee hour at 11:30 am through the Zoom application. We are hoping it will be an uplifting platform to catch up with one another and see each other’s smiling faces. To join the meeting (and download Zoom, if you don’t have it already), please visit https://risd.zoom.us/j/669912117. If you have any questions or need help setting up Zoom, please don’t hesitate to contact Junior Warden Alison Huff (401-465-8029 or alisonhuff12@gmail.com) or Communications Director Jacob Ihnen (712-348-5848 or jacob_ihnen@alumni.brown.edu).

Concerning Pledges and the Sunday Offering –
A key worry in this time of physical distancing is that our inability to gather as a church damages our income. A parishioner reached out wondering whether it was safe to send pledge envelopes in the mail. We have heard nothing from the public health authorities about the risks of virus transmission through the mail, so feel free to mail your check to the church. Alternatively, it is quite straightforward to give online by clicking here to visit S. Stephen’s online giving page, where you can use the payment portal week by week or set up a recurring direct deposit program with your bank. We are grateful for your generous response to our appeal for pledges in this transition year. Now the challenge is for us to receive and collect these pledges. We don’t know how long this period of physical distancing will have to last. If you are experiencing financial difficulties which hurt your ability to keep a pledge you made before this crisis of the coronavirus, please do not hesitate to let us know. You may contact Father Mead at 917-592-5947 or email him at andrewcraigmead1@gmail.com. Thank you for your love of S. Stephen’s.

Society of Mary – will meet virtually this coming Saturday, 4 April, beginning with Holy Rosary following the 10 am Low Mass and a brief meeting. Both the recitation of the Rosary and the Meeting will be conducted through the Zoom application. To join both, please visit https://us04web.zoom.us/j/476810552. All are welcome and invited to participate!

Stations of the Cross – Saint Stephen's Church will virtually offer Stations of the Cross at 6 pm on Fridays in Lent through (and including) 3 April, and again on Good Friday (10 April). This is a great opportunity to experience this moving devotion anew or indeed for the first time! All are welcome to tune in!

College Ministry – The Episcopal Ministry at Brown and RISD (EMBR) continues its meetings virtually this Sunday, 29 March, at 5:30 pm for Evening Prayer. All are most welcome and invited to participate!

Easter Flowers – If you would like to make a flower offering at Easter for the altar in our virtual Easter Mass – in thanksgiving or in memoriam - please make a list and write a check with “Easter Flowers” in the memo line and mail both to the parish office no later than Sunday 5 April.

Anglican Cycle of Prayer – This Sunday, the Fifth Sunday in Lent, is the focus of the Primates’ Task Group’s call for a period of prayer and repentance in the Anglican Communion. The Bishop of West Malaysia, Moon Hing, is a member of the Task Group and has written this prayer, which the Task Group offers to the Anglican Communion for use today. Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Sovereign Lord of the universe, Creator of humankind, we, your unfaithful children, are truly sorry for our sins and the lives that we have lived. We sincerely believe and confess in our hearts that only through the precious blood of our Lord Jesus Christ on the cross at Calvary, can we obtain Your forgiveness. We repent that: In thought, word or deed, we have committed serious offences against You and our neighbours; In laziness, despair and lust for power, we have provoked hatred, division and hurt within our communities; In greed, deceit and indifference, we have caused serious damage, unnecessary conflict and aggravated destruction to our refugee and migrant brothers and sisters; In selfishness, insensitivity and bias, we have encouraged and emboldened those who inflict hurt, pain and sorrow on our loved ones and families; In the name of religion, doctrine and even of Christ himself, we have wounded believers and pursuers of holiness and faith; In stubbornness, pride and arrogance, we have caused division and strife within Your church and among Your children; Mercifully send Your Holy Spirit – the Spirit of order and comfort – and cleanse us from all unrighteousness; restore in us true faith in Christ which brings truth, peace and harmony; and help us to walk together with our brothers and sisters in the peace of our Lord Jesus Christ to the glory of Your name. Amen.

Diocesan Cycle of Prayer – In the Diocesan Cycle of Prayer, we are asked to pray for the people and clergy of The Church of the Beloved, Pascoag.

Sunday Services Offered, Resources, and Updates

S. Stephen's Church

"Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God." (Acts 7:56)

Sunday March 15
Lent III, Year A

Dearly Beloved in Christ,

Today, with Fr. Michael Pearson and Fr. Bill Locke, enabled by our Communications Director Jacob Ihnen, we offered and recorded today's Mass in the Lady Chapel, and it is available in audio/video form on the website here.

We intend to record and broadcast our daily Masses as well. Tomorrow's Mass is celebrated by Fr. Locke at 6 pm (preceded by Evening Prayer at 5:30 pm). We plan to offer the Holy Sacrifice each day, even though the services are not public because of the health restrictions due to the COVID-19 virus.

For updated parish notes for this week, please click here.

Daily Mass is the jewel in the crown of S. Stephen's and has been since the nineteenth century Anglo-Catholic Revival. It is our gift also to the Diocese and wider church. So stay tuned, and may Christ, his Mother, and all the saints be with us all.

Faithfully yours,

Fr. Andrew C. Mead

Cancellation Eve: A Message from Fr. Mead

S. Stephen's Church

"Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God." (Acts 7:56)

Saturday, March 14, 2020

Dearly Beloved in Christ,

I write on the eve of our now cancelled Masses for the Third Sunday in Lent. We do not know how long we will have to do without our public services of worship. In any case, they are suspended until further notice. I think we may need to wrap our minds around the possibility of the heretofore unthinkable suspension of Holy Week and Easter, less than a month away. In doing so, I commend our Lord Jesus’s simple yet profound statement concerning the observance of the Sabbath Day, when he and his disciples were criticized by the Pharisees for healing the sick and otherwise doing good works on the Seventh Day: “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.”

I share with you three links.

The first one is on the Coronavirus and concerns the CDC’s guidelines on mitigating the spread of the virus:  https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/downloads/community-mitigation-strategy.pdf.

The second link is something you can use repeatedly: the Great Litany and Supplication from the Book of Common Prayer. The Litany is what we sang in procession at S. Stephen’s on the First Sunday in Lent. The Supplication is rarely used, except on occasions of great national concern, such as this pandemic:
https://www.bcponline.org/GreatLitany/Litany.html.

The third link is the Diocese of Rhode Island’s various resources for worship at home: https://www.episcopalri.org/worship-at-home/. Notably tomorrow, Sunday, March 15, is a broadcast of service at 11:00 am led by the Presiding Bishop Michael Curry.

Picking up from my opening paragraph, let me share with you some things from the Book of Common Prayer, both 1979 and 1928 editions, concerning the issue of not being able physically to taste and touch the Sacrament of Holy Communion under the Forms of Bread and Wine:

Spiritual Communion When Unable Physically to Receive the Sacrament

From the Book of Common Prayer 1979, page 457If a person desires to receive the Sacrament, but by reason of extreme sickness or physical disability, is unable to eat and drink the Bread and Wine, the Celebrant is to assure that person that all the benefits of Communion are received, even though the Sacrament is not received with the mouth.

From the Book of Common Prayer 1928, page 323If a man, either by reason of extremity of sickness, or for want of warning in due time to the Minister, or by any other just impediment, do not receive the Sacrament of Christ’s Body and Blood, the Minister shall instruct him, that if he do truly repent him of his sins, and stedfastly believe that Jesus Christ hath suffered death upon the Cross for him, and shed his Blood for his redemption, earnestly remembering the benefits he hath thereby, and giving him hearty thanks therefor, he doth eat and drink the Body and Blood of our Saviour Christ profitably to his soul’s health, although he do not receive the Sacrament with his mouth.

You can pray A Form of Spiritual Communion at home by visiting this link: http://anglicanhistory.org/oceania/wood_communion1916.html

The application of this principle of Spiritual Communion to our present situation of the highly contagious COVID 19 virus should bring us comfort. Most especially I commend the words of our Lord on this subject of his life-saving Body and Blood in the Gospel according to Saint John 6:25-71.

I will be in touch with you this week in due course, by written and by spoken/audio, such as you have been receiving from me the past nine months on our website, where our sermons are available both in text and audio. So stay tuned, pray for our beloved S. Stephen’s, and let us know if you need help.

Faithfully yours,

Fr. Andrew C. Mead

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT: Cancellation of Services

S. Stephen's Church

"Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God." (Acts 7:56)

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT: Cancellation of Services

Dear friends,

On the advice of Bishop Knisely and Governor Raimondo, we have decided to take the extraordinary step of cancelling all church services for the time-being. By all accounts, reducing social interaction is the most effective means of stemming what has suddenly become a pandemic of COVID-19. Corporate worship is at the very foundation of Christian practice but we must remember that “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.” We hope and pray that we are able to return to our usual and customary practices soon.

In the meantime, some parishes in the Diocese are streaming the celebration of Mass and/or other Offices, and we foresee sending out links to those presentations and our own commentary on scripture texts in the next few days. The office phone lines will be monitored periodically, please let us know if you have pastoral or other needs (shopping or assistance with meals, transportation to medical appointments). If there are urgent pastoral needs, please contact Fr. Mead directly at (917) 592-5947. For other needs, please reach out to Senior Warden Tom Bledsoe at (401) 480-8701 or Junior Warden Alison Huff (401) 465-8029, and leave a message.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you and all the members of our community, and for all of humanity.

O Lord, look down from heaven, behold, visit, and relieve thy sick people. Look upon them with the eyes of thy mercy, give them comfort and sure confidence in thee, defend them in all danger, and keep them in perpetual peace and safety; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Fr. Andrew Mead, Tom Bledsoe, Alison Huff

Visitors and guests are always welcome! If you attend S. Stephen’s on any given Sunday, please join us for Coffee Hour following the 8 am Mass in the Narthex and following the 10 am Mass in the Great Hall upstairs. If you have any questions or special needs before or during the service, please speak to one of the ushers, who will be glad to assist you. We look forward to meeting you!

Joining us with small children? – We are so glad you will be here! Our Sunday School program and nursery are available throughout the program year ten minutes before and during the 10 am Mass, and the ushers will be happy to direct you.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

COVID-19/influenza update – Please be assured that we are taking communicable disease risks seriously. To that end:

  • The priests and servers all wash their hands before and after each Mass and the altar rail is likewise cleaned before and after each Mass. Those hosting coffee hour are likewise instructed to practice good hand-washing.
  • As we have been doing throughout flu season, parishioners are offered the choice of receiving in both kinds at communion or just taking the host. As there is no significant difference in communicable disease risk between having the priest do the intinction for you or drinking from the chalice, both will be offered until we are instructed otherwise by the diocese or the Health Department. Just cross your arms when offered if you choose to not receive from the chalice.
  • At the peace and when leaving the church, you may choose to bow or make some other method of greeting your neighbors. As is always the case, please be respectful of others who choose to avoid physical contact.
  • At coffee hour, please use the tongs provided to pick up your food items.
  • As always, if you are ill, consider staying home until you are well. Please let the office or other parish members know if we can help you (including saying a prayer for you to get better soon)!

Daylight Saving Time – begins this Sunday 8 March. Remember to set your clocks forward one hour on Saturday night.

Vestry Meeting – The Vestry will conduct its monthly meeting next Tuesday, 10 March, at 7 pm in the Parish Library.

Ecumenical Stations – Continuing again this year, the Episcopal Ministry at Brown and RISD (EMBR) has teamed up with the Brown-RISD Catholic Community (BRCC) to offer Stations of the Cross at S. Stephen’s at 6 pm on Fridays in Lent through (and including) April 3. This is a great opportunity to experience this moving devotion anew or indeed for the first time—all are welcome!

Easter Flowers – If you would like to make a flower offering at Easter – in thanksgiving or in memoriam - please fill out a flower envelope (which will be enclosed in the Kalendar every Sunday in Lent) and either put it in the offering plate or return it to the parish office no later than Sunday 5 April.

College Ministry – The Episcopal Ministry at Brown and RISD (EMBR) continues its meetings this Sunday, 8 March, at 5:30 pm for Evening Prayer, followed by a meal. All are most welcome and invited!
