PARISH NOTES
SUNDAY 29 MAY 2016

Jules Breton, Corpus Christi Procession (Detail)
(Blessing of the Wheat), 1857

FROM THE RECTOR

Corpus Christi Sunday falls this year during Memorial Day weekend, which at S. Stephen's is Brown Commencement weekend. Our full schedule of Sunday morning services will take place as always, beginning with Morning Prayer at 7:30 am. Both Masses will feature the readings and prayers for the Solemnity of Corpus Christi, the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. This is also the last Sunday of the season with full choir at the 10 am Mass. Despite the one-way system around the church, it is eminently possible to approach by car, and most people find parking within four or five blocks of the church. Please make every effort to attend if you are able. -- Fr. John D. Alexander

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Welcome – to all visitors and newcomers, especially those in town for graduation – we’re glad that you’re here. Please join us after the 8:00 am Mass for coffee and refreshments in the narthex.

Please note – that there will be no Coffee Hour following our 10 am Mass today due to a Brown University departmental graduation ceremony being held in the Great Hall.

Brown Commencement Sunday – This morning we offer our customary round of services: Morning Prayer at 7:30 am, followed by Low Mass at 8 am, and Solemn Mass at 10 am. We regret that we need to omit the Corpus Christi Procession & Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament after the 10 am Mass; but we plan to bring it back in future years!

Guest Organist and Conductor – welcome to Brent Erstad, guest organist this morning, filling in for James Busby, who is on vacation; and to Stephen Buck, who conducts the Schola Cantorum today, while James is away.

Congratulations – to Jackie Rice who graduates from Brown today and will begin graduate studies at Yale University in the Fall. A mainstay of the Episcopal Student Group for the past four years, Jackie has been made a Postulant for Holy Orders in the Diocese of Rhode Island. Our thoughts and prayers go with her.

Memorial Day (May 30th) – as on all Federal Public Holidays falling on a Monday, Low Mass tomorrow will be offered at 9:30 am, preceded by Morning Prayer at 9 am. Please note the time change.

Change to Daily Mass Schedule – Following Memorial Day, the weekly Mass schedule will change: Tuesday and Thursday Low Masses will now be held at 12:10 pm, preceded by the Angelus at noon. All other service times will remain the same. (Please note that on Memorial Day we will have Morning Prayer and Low Mass at the customary holiday times of 9 & 9:30 am.)

Visitation – This Tuesday 31 May, the clergy and people of St. John’s, Newport, will join us to celebrate the Feast of the Visitation with Solemn High Mass at 6 pm here at S. Stephen’s. Our Guest preacher will be the Rev. Stephanie Shoemaker.

Society of Mary – The Society of Mary will meet this Saturday 4 June for 9 am Morning Prayer, 9:30 Mass, then recitation of the Rosary. Everyone is invited.

Annual Parish Barbecue – will be on Sunday 12 June in the Great Hall, immediately following the 10 am Solemn Mass. We need volunteers to coordinate, help set up, to bring food and beverages, to work the grill, and to clean up. To volunteer for any of these roles, please see Karl or Klara Benziger, Sue Brazil, Nancy Gingrich, or Cory MacLean.

Sunday School Recognition – On Sunday 12 June at the 10 am Sung Mass, we will recognize the students and teachers who participated in the Sunday School program this year. Please make every effort to attend.

Coffee Hour Contributions – We regret that owing to new diocesan regulations concerning the handling of cash in parishes, we are no longer able to receive donations at Coffee Hour for coffee, food, and supplies. The donations basket will no longer be available. We thank all those who have contributed to this important ministry. Those who wish to make donations to help defray Coffee Hour expenses are welcome to put a check in the collection plate during Mass, or mail a check to the parish office, with the notation "Coffee Hour" clearly marked in the memo line.

Goodwill Industries – There is a clothing collection box in the Great Hall for the next few weeks on behalf of Goodwill Industries. One of their objectives is helping people in need to find employment, and to that end, they are accepting donations of clothing suitable for job interviews.
