PARISH NOTES
Sunday 13 May 2018

The Election of Matthias as One of the Twelve (1875)
Church of St. Mor and St. Deiniol, Llanfor, Gwynedd, Wales

FROM THE RECTOR

Thanks are due to all parishioners and friends who attended the East Side Episcopal parishes' joint celebration of the Feast of the Ascension on Thursday (8 May); and thanks to the clergy and people of Saint Martin's Church for hosting this unprecedented event. In attendance were 90 people, of whom we counted 22 from S. Stephen's. Well done.

Fittingly for Mothers' Day, this Sunday is the occasion of our Annual May Procession of our Lady: always lots of fun and a good witness to the neighborhood. We welcome Fr. Andrew Mead as our guest preacher at the 10:00 am Solemn Mass. Please come out this Sunday and join in the celebration.
-- Fr. John D. Alexander

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Welcome to our Visiting Preacher – at the 10:00 am Mass, the Rev’d Andrew C. Mead, DD, OBE, Rector Emeritus of Saint Thomas’ Church Fifth Avenue in New York City, and a long-time friend of S. Stephen’s.

Visit of Bethlehem Artworks – Beautiful hand-made olive wood religious articles made by Christian families in Bethlehem and Jerusalem will be on sale today, May 13th, after both Masses. Bethlehem Artworks is an organization that provides assistance to over 100 Palestinian Christian families each week. Hand-made rosaries, statues, crosses and nativities make wonderful presents for family and friends; or an opportunity to add a beautiful hand carved religious item for your home to be cherished through generations. The religious articles are made by the suffering Christian families in the Holy-Land, and are their means of spreading the word of Jesus, a goal that began two thousand years ago. The Christian population in the Holy Land has dropped from over 65% to under 2% just within the last ten years. Crafting these religious articles is the primary means for providing for the livelihood of Christian families in the Holy Land.

New Warden and Member of Vestry – We are pleased to announce that at its meeting this past Tuesday (May 8th), the Vestry elected Bill Dilworth to serve as Junior Warden of S. Stephen’s until the next Annual Parish Meeting in January 2019, when he will be eligible for re-election to a three-year term. Also, Alison Huff was elected to one of two vacant seats in the Vestry class of 2021. We hope to fill the remaining vacant seat at the next Vestry meeing in June. For more information on this process, feel free to speak with the Rector or one of the Wardens (Tom Bledsoe and Bill Dilworth). Congratulations to Bill and Alison; and thanks to both for consenting to serve.

Coffee Hour Rota – We need someone to take over the responsibility of organizing the rota of Coffee Hour hosts. Please speak to Fr. Alexander or Cathy Bledsoe if you might be interested.

The Parish Barbecue – is scheduled for Sunday 3 June (the Solemnity of Corpus Christi), which will also be the last regular choir Sunday of the season, and Sunday School Recognition. We need lots of volunteers to help with the setup, cooking, serving, and cleanup. Please call or email Susan in the parish office to sign up to help.

The Epiphany Soup Kitchen (ESK) Board – could use some more members from S. Stephen’s. If you would be interested in serving – or just learning more about what is involved – please contact Bruce Lennihan. (ESK is an independent non-profit corporation, hosted at but not part of the parish.)

The Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary – will be celebrated at Saint John’s, Newport, on Thursday 31 May as part of our continuing series of joint services. Fr. Alexander will be the preacher. All are cordially invited to attend.
