PARISH NOTES
Sunday 4 November 2018

Icon of All Saints (19th century).
Agiou Pavlou Monastery, Mount Athos, Greece

FROM THE RECTOR

In the past week, we have witnessed horrifying manifestations of evil abroad in the world: letter bombs sent through the mail to public figures; eleven Jewish worshipers murdered at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh. Such crimes of hatred confront us with the depths of depravity to which the human spirit can sink, especially in conditions of social tension and political dislocation.

As Christians we have a moral obligation to repudiate all forms of political violence and scapegoating of minorities; and anti-Semitism in particular. As Pope John Paul II rightly said, the Jews are our elder brothers and sisters in faith; through them we have inherited God’s promises to Abraham and his descendants. Christ, Our Lady, and the Apostles were all observant Jews. In a time of mounting anti-Semitism in our country, we are called to stand in solidarity with our Jewish neighbors.

All Saints and All Souls come this year at an opportune time. The Solemnity of All Saints reminds us that despite the evil in the world, God’s Spirit still moves among his people to inspire goodness and heroism. Think of the first responders who came to the aid of those under attack. Think of the way that community organizations in Pittsburgh, including the local Islamic Center, have rallied around to support the people of the Squirrel Hill neighborhood.

The Holy Spirit’s work is not confined to the Church but, as Christians, we rely on our Saints to show us that lives of holiness in Christ remain possible for each one of us. On the Sunday after All Saints Day (November 4), we shall be administering Holy Baptism to Tayo Heuser and recommitting ourselves with her to our Baptismal Promises, which invite us to become saints, holy ones of God.

All Souls Day in turn bids us pray not only for those whom we love but see no longer, but for All the Faithful Departed. Those who lost their lives in the Tree of Life Synagogue were martyrs who witnessed to their faith even unto death. The All Souls Sung Requiem Mass (at 7 pm on November 2) will be offered with special intention that, along with all the Faithful Departed, they may rest in peace and rise in glory. – Fr. John D. Alexander

PARISH NOTES
Sunday 28 October 2018

Lucas van Leyden. Christ Healing the Blind Man of Jericho. 1531. The Hermitage, St. Petersburg, Russia.

FROM THE RECTOR

What do you want me to do for you?” In this Sunday’s Gospel Jesus asks blind Bartimaeus exactly the same question that he asked James and John the sons of Zebedee in last Sunday’s Gospel. Their response was prideful and ambitious: “Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory.” Bartimaeus’s response is humble and simple: “Master, let me receive my sight.” Jesus grants his request, declaring, “Go your way; your faith has made you well.” But instead of going his way, Bartimaeus follows Jesus on the way – in explicit contrast to the rich man in the Gospel reading of two weeks ago who “went away sorrowful; for he had great possessions.” Bartimaeus thus stands as a model of faithful discipleship: crying out to the Lord, acknowledging his need, receiving his sight, and following Jesus on the way. If Jesus asked us the same question – What do you want me to do for you? – how would we answer? – Fr. John D. Alexander

PARISH NOTES
Sunday 21 October 2018

Lorenzo Monaco, Christ as Man of Sorrows (1415-1417). Private collection.

FROM THE RECTOR

This Sunday’s readings emphasize Christ’s role as Servant. The Old Testament reading from Isaiah 53 speaks of “the righteous one, my servant” who by his suffering makes many to be accounted righteous. The Gospel reading from Mark 10 holds up the Son of man, who “came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Christ is the Servant first of God and then of those he came to save. When James and John the sons of Zebedee ask to sit one at his right and one at his left in his glory, he asks them whether they are able to drink the cup that he must drink and be baptized with the baptism with which he must be baptized—alluding to his imminent suffering and death. In other words, the pattern of Christian discipleship is not self-affirmation or self-fulfillment, but humble service of God and our neighbor even at the cost of total self-sacrifice. Paradoxically, however, this way of sacrificial self-giving is the only sure path to perfect freedom, fulfillment, and glory. Join us this Sunday as we explore what it means to be servants of Christ, the Servant of God. – Fr. John D. Alexander

PARISH NOTES
Sunday 14 October 2018

Contemporary Orthodox Icon of Christ as High Priest

FROM THE RECTOR

Traditional Christian theology speaks of Christ’s triplex munus or “threefold office” of Prophet, Priest, and King. (The Latin munus can also be translated “service,” “duty,” “work,” or “ministry.”) This Sunday’s reading from the Letter to the Hebrews refers specifically to his priestly office: “Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we have not a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who has been in every way tempted as we are, yet without sin.” A priest offers sacrifice to God on behalf of the people, especially for the forgiveness of sins. Christ is our great high priest in that as God incarnate he offers on the cross a sacrifice of infinite value, and then carries this offering into heaven to intercede before the Father on our behalf. Every Eucharist is a re-presentation, a making-present, of that one, full, perfect, and sufficient sacrifice for the sins of the whole world. We are united with his sacrifice and receive his life into ourselves every time we come forward for Holy Communion. There is no greater joy in this world or the next than to know Jesus Christ as our great high priest. Let us hold fast our confession.
– Fr. John D. Alexander
