Ascension of Christ

FROM THE RECTOR

On the Sunday after Ascension we celebrate and reflect on the great mystery that the One who came down from heaven to share our human nature and to participate in every stage of human life -- from conception and birth to suffering and death -- has now ascended into heaven to appear in the presence of God on our behalf. In him, human nature itself has been healed, restored, forgiven, resurrected, and glorified. Where he has gone before us, we in turn hope to follow; because he has shared in our life in this world we have the promise of sharing in his life in the next. -- Fr. John D. Alexander

FROM THE RECTOR

Happy Mother's Day! At its best, this secular observance reminds us what the old manuals of moral theology called the virtue of "filial piety" -- expressing due respect and gratitude for the gifts of life, nurture, upbringing, and education given us by our earthly parents. Since Mother's Day falls on a Sunday, it reminds us also that the Church is our Mother; and since May is Mary's month, we remember also the spiritual Motherhood of the Blessed Virgin Mary's for all who have received adoption as brothers and sisters of our Lord Jesus Christ in Holy Baptism. We have much to celebrate. Let us keep the feast.
