FROM THE RECTOR

“Will that be on the exam?” Years ago, students were notorious for asking that question. Perhaps they still are. I remember furiously taking notes during lectures, especially from the professors I most admired, so that I would be able to reproduce their pearls of wisdom when the time of testing came. But occasionally my note-taking was imperfect and I discovered that I had missed a key point in the argument. At such moments, comparing notes with classmates or asking questions of the teaching assistants was a useful way to fill in the gaps.

In this Sunday’s Gospel from John’s “Farewell Discourse,” Jesus declares that those who love him will keep his words. But how? So far, he has said so much, and they have understood so little. He answers this implicit question by promising the “the Counselor, the Holy Spirit,” whom the Father will send in his Name: “he will teach you all things and bring to remembrance all that I have said to you.” The real mission of the Holy Spirit in the Church is not to teach “new truths,” but to “bring to remembrance” all that Jesus has taught, so that we may understand how his words apply in ever-new and changing situations. In our time of testing, then, we do well to rely upon the Holy Spirit’s counsel, so that we may both keep the Lord’s words and do them. – Fr. John D. Alexander

FROM THE RECTOR

“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; even as I have loved you, that you also love one another” (John 13:34). This saying of our Lord comes from the “Farewell Discourse” at the Last Supper. In what sense is it a “new” commandment? The Old Testament Law had included the command to “love your neighbor as yourself” (Leviticus 19:18). What is “new” here is the further qualification “even as I have loved you.” In this section of John’s Gospel, Jeus has just washed his disciples’ feet as a sign of his servanthood which will find its fulfillment the following day when he gives his life on the cross. Further on in the discourse, he explains: “Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends” (John 15:13). Here, then, our Lord is exhorting his disciples to be servants of one another, and to love one another with a self-denying, self-sacrificing love. Love among Christians is the most powerful sign possible of the reality of God’s love for the world: “By this all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” – Fr. John D. Alexander

FROM THE RECTOR

In this Sunday’s reading from the Revelation to Saint John, set in the context of heavenly worship, we encounter the paradoxical image of a lamb who becomes a shepherd. The figure of a lamb signifies weakness and vulnerability; that of a shepherd signifies strength and protection. And yet, “the lamb in the midst of the throne will be their shepherd.” Moreover, the lamb has been slain and yet lives again, and the lamb’s flock, “a great multitude which no man could number, from all tribes and peoples and tongues” consists of those who have “washed their robes in the blood of the lamb.” In the apocalyptic imagery of Revelation, the lamb is the crucified and risen Jesus; the flock consists of all those who have lived and died in Christ: especially the martyrs and others who have suffered for their faith. Here perhaps we have a salutary corrective to the frequently saccharine imagery of Good Shepherd Sunday. Our Shepherd is the lamb who is slain and yet lives; he shepherds us through life and death and brings us home to his heavenly abode where God wipes away every tear from our eyes. And that is good news indeed. – Fr. John D. Alexander

Sunday 5 May 2019

Raphael, Christ’s Charge to Peter (1515)
Victoria and Albert Museum, London, England

FROM THE RECTOR

This Sunday’s Gospel comes from the “Epilogue” to John. (The Fourth Gospel has both a “Prologue”—opening with “In the beginning was the Word …”—and an “Epilogue,” consisting of the appearance of the Risen Jesus to the disciples by the Sea of Tiberias in Chapter 21. The chapter is replete with sacramental symbolism. It begins with a miraculous catch of fish, evocative of Christian mission and baptism; it continues with breakfast on the beach, resonant with Eucharistic imagery; and it concludes with the Restoration of Peter, whom Jesus asks three times, “Do you love me?” thus giving him the opportunity to undo his earlier threefold denial. Jesus both forgives Peter and three times commissions him to tend his flock: the fisherman becomes a shepherd of souls. The Risen Christ’s presence transforms the most ordinary and mundane activities into opportunities for mission, fellowship, forgiveness, love and, most of all, the call to follow. – Fr. John D. Alexander
