PARISH NOTES
Sunday 3 July 2016

Russian Icon of the Seventy Apostles

FROM THE RECTOR

In the tenth chapter of Saint Luke's Gospel, our Lord entrusts seventy (some manuscripts say seventy-two) disciples with a share in his mission. They are to go out in pairs ahead of him, to the towns he himself will subsequently visit, preaching the Gospel and healing the sick. They are, as it were, his advance party. Their spectacular success reminds us that Jesus entrusts all the members of his Church with some share in his mission. No-one is so unimportant or insignificant as to have no vital role to play in advancing God's Kingdom. Just as the seventy returned rejoicing, so we gather every Sunday at Mass to worship God and to receive our commission and strength to do the Lord's work in the wider world. -- Fr. John D. Alexander

PARISH NOTES
SUNDAY 19 JUNE 2016

Sebastien Bourdon, Exorcism of the Gerasene Demoniac, 1653

FROM THE RECTOR

At the outbreak of World War II, Bishop George Bell of Chichester (in England) remarked that in times of crisis the primary task of the Church is "to be still the Church" – to do what the Church does. The Church's mission has many dimensions, including fellowship, witness, and service; but first of all come worship and prayer. Much is happening in the world to cause us anxiety. That is all the more reason to come to Mass and participate in the Church's offering of praise and thanksgiving to God, along with prayers and intercessions for the world, and repentance for our own complicity in the ills that beset us. In times of crisis, our greatest service to the world is "to be still the Church," and to do what the Church does. -- Fr. John D. Alexander

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION

This Saturday 18 June beginning at approximately 10 am we shall engage in an hour of Eucharistic Adoration in the Lady Chapel, concluding at 11 am. (This devotion follows regularly scheduled Morning Prayer at 9 am and Low Mass at 9:30 am.)

In this devotion -- also known as a "Holy Hour" -- the Blessed Sacrament is exposed in a monstrance on the altar for adoration by the faithful. The hour begins with a Litany of the Blessed Sacrament, and concludes with a brief service of Benediction.

The time in between is taken up in silent prayer and meditation before Our Lord's sacramental presence. This devotion is ideal for those drawn to contemplative prayer or the prayer of silence. Come experience the beauty of holiness.

PARISH NOTES
SUNDAY 5 JUNE 2016

Jesus resurrecting the son of the widow of Nain
Pierre Bouillon (1776-1831)

FROM THE RECTOR

This Sunday begins the "Green Season," more properly known as the Season after Trinity, the Season after Pentecost, and (less felicitously) "Ordinary Time." The green color of the vestments and hangings symbolizes growth and fecundity. It is a time to pay close attention to the readings and prayers prescribed for each Sunday's liturgy as aids to our spiritual growth and development. We begin this Sunday with stories in the Old Testament reading and Gospel of widows whose only sons died and were brought back to life by the prophet Elijah and the Lord Jesus respectively. These stories speak of God's compassion for the most vulnerable members of the human family: a message we need to hear in a world that often seems cruel and indifferent to those who suffer. -- Fr. John D. Alexander
