PARISH NOTES
Sunday 23 October 2016

The Martyrdom of Saint James
The Master of the Winkler Epitaph, c. 1480

FROM THE RECTOR

Saint James of Jerusalem was a close relative of the Lord (in New Testament Greek adelphos can mean either "brother" or "kinsman") and the first bishop of Jerusalem. He may or may not be identical with the Apostle known as James the son of Alphaeus or "James the Less." He is mentioned in several places in the New Testament as a prominent leader of the apostolic Church, and the Epistle of James is attributed to his authorship.

When a Major Feast falls on a Sunday it is normally transferred to the first open day in the week, but the Prayer Book gives us permission to make an exception to this rule by substituting "the Collect, Preface, and one or more of the Lessons appointed for the Feast ... for those of the Sunday" (p. 16). We are happy to take advantage of this opportunity for Sunday observance of Saints Days that might otherwise never come to the attention of the majority of our congregation.

The 10 am Mass features as the Anthem "A Trope for Saint James" composed by our good friend Daryl Bichel. So please come and join in the celebration this Sunday of the Feast of Saint James of Jerusalem.
-- Fr. John D. Alexander
