“What do you want me to do for you?” In this Sunday’s Gospel Jesus asks blind Bartimaeus exactly the same question that he asked James and John the sons of Zebedee in last Sunday’s Gospel. Their response was prideful and ambitious: “Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory.” Bartimaeus’s response is humble and simple: “Master, let me receive my sight.” Jesus grants his request, declaring, “Go your way; your faith has made you well.” But instead of going his way, Bartimaeus follows Jesus on the way – in explicit contrast to the rich man in the Gospel reading of two weeks ago who “went away sorrowful; for he had great possessions.” Bartimaeus thus stands as a model of faithful discipleship: crying out to the Lord, acknowledging his need, receiving his sight, and following Jesus on the way. If Jesus asked us the same question – What do you want me to do for you? – how would we answer? – Fr. John D. Alexander

All Saints Day (November 1st) – a major feast of the church year will be kept this Thursday with Noonday Prayer at 12:00 noon, and Low Mass following at 12:10 pm.

All Souls Day (November 2nd) – will be commemorated with a Sung Requiem Mass this Friday at 7:00 pm. Please get your list of departed loved ones to the Parish Office no later than Tuesday, October 30, and make every effort to attend this beautiful and moving liturgy if you can. Thank you!

Society of Mary – meets this Saturday, November 3, beginning with Holy Rosary following the 10:00 am Mass and a brief meeting (for coffee and bagels) to follow in the Great Hall. All are welcome and invited.

Volunteer for Acolyte Rota – Fr. Alexander is seeking parishioners young and old who would like to be trained as servers for the 10:00 am Mass on Sundays and for special services throughout the year. Please get in touch with him if you are willing or know someone else who would be. Thank you!

FROM THE RECTOR

This Sunday’s readings emphasize Christ’s role as Servant. The Old Testament reading from Isaiah 53 speaks of “the righteous one, my servant” who by his suffering makes many to be accounted righteous. The Gospel reading from Mark 10 holds up the Son of man, who “came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Christ is the Servant first of God and then of those he came to save. When James and John the sons of Zebedee ask to sit one at his right and one at his left in his glory, he asks them whether they are able to drink the cup that he must drink and be baptized with the baptism with which he must be baptized—alluding to his imminent suffering and death. In other words, the pattern of Christian discipleship is not self-affirmation or self-fulfillment, but humble service of God and our neighbor even at the cost of total self-sacrifice. Paradoxically, however, this way of sacrificial self-giving is the only sure path to perfect freedom, fulfillment, and glory. Join us this Sunday as we explore what it means to be servants of Christ, the Servant of God. – Fr. John D. Alexander

Contemporary Orthodox Icon of Christ as High Priest

FROM THE RECTOR

Traditional Christian theology speaks of Christ’s triplex munus or “threefold office” of Prophet, Priest, and King. (The Latin munus can also be translated “service,” “duty,” “work,” or “ministry.”) This Sunday’s reading from the Letter to the Hebrews refers specifically to his priestly office: “Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we have not a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who has been in every way tempted as we are, yet without sin.” A priest offers sacrifice to God on behalf of the people, especially for the forgiveness of sins. Christ is our great high priest in that as God incarnate he offers on the cross a sacrifice of infinite value, and then carries this offering into heaven to intercede before the Father on our behalf. Every Eucharist is a re-presentation, a making-present, of that one, full, perfect, and sufficient sacrifice for the sins of the whole world. We are united with his sacrifice and receive his life into ourselves every time we come forward for Holy Communion. There is no greater joy in this world or the next than to know Jesus Christ as our great high priest. Let us hold fast our confession.

The Anniversary of the Dedication is our annual celebration of the consecration of our present church building on February 27, 1862. Since the actual anniversary often falls in Lent – and the Sundays of Lent always take precedence over anything else – we take advantage of an old English custom of celebrating the Dedication on the first Sunday in October. It is a time to give thanks for our church building, for our parish forebears who built it, and for the generations of faithful parishioners who have worshipped here. At the same time, we rededicate ourselves to our mission and ministry in this place, including stewardship of the wonderful architectural and artistic gifts we have inherited and will pass on to those who come after us. Do please join us for this joyous and festive celebration. – Fr. John D. Alexander

Volunteer for Acolyte Rota – Fr. Alexander is seeking parishioners young and old who would like to be trained to serve as acolytes for the 10:00 am Mass on Sundays and for special services throughout the year.
