Mary of Bethany Anoints the Feet of Jesus

FROM THE RECTOR

This Sunday's Gospel features the touching story of Mary of Bethany anointing the feet of Jesus, depicted above. Some version of this story appears in all four canonical Gospels. When Judas Iscariot complains that the ointment could have been sold and the proceeds given to the poor, Jesus responds, "Let her alone; let her keep it for the day of my burial." On this fifth Sunday of Lent, we continue to prepare ourselves spiritually -- along with Mary of Bethany -- for the coming observances of our Lord's Passion, Death, and Resurrection. -- Fr. John D. Alexander
