Altar Flowers – The flowers at the high altar this Sunday are given to the glory of God and in loving memory of Megda Dunham Hawkins (20 October 1984) by the Altar Guild in thanksgiving for her particular stewardship of our altar and the work of our altar guild and servers, all to the greater glory of God. May she rest in peace and rise in glory.

Parish History Event – The next step in the rector search process is a Parish History Event this Sunday, 20 October, to be facilitated by Canon Dena Cleaver-Bartholomew at coffee hour after she joins us for Mass. Canon Dena will ask the help of the church members in sharing their memories and perspectives to answer the questions: What is our history? Who are we now? And Who do we hope to become? She writes that this “is a participatory event, and it is only with all of our voices that we can create the fullest and most accurate picture of St. Stephen’s so that we can enter discernment with priests who may feel called to serve as your next Rector. The Parish History Event is a large group enterprise and provides a different setting for input than the small group discussions you have already had.” Please make every effort to join us on Sunday if you are able!

Street Closures this Sunday – There will be several street closures this Sunday beginning at 5 am and ending at 12 noon. Please visit http://www.providenceri.gov/act/event-street-closures/ to see if your normal Sunday route will be affected.

Daily Mass – Please consider joining Fr. Mead, Fr. Pearson, Fr. Locke or Fr. Sturni at a weekday Mass or for Morning, Noonday, and Evening Prayer; it might be good for you!

Sick and Shut-in Ministry – A recurring theme from our community forums has been the need to be better as a parish in keeping track of and attending to our members who are sick or shut-in. We can do better. If you are interested in assisting with this important ministry, please speak to Tom Bledsoe or Alison Huff in person or by email (thomas_bledsoe@brown.edu, alisonhuff12@gmail.com).

Saint James of Jerusalem (October 23rd) – a major feast of the church year will be kept this coming Wednesday with Evening Prayer at 5:30 pm, and Low Mass following at 6 pm.

Stewardship Program – If you have not yet done so, please prayerfully consider making your pledge of financial contributions to S. Stephen’s for 2020 by filling out a physical or online pledge card. Physical pledge cards may be found in the Narthex or obtained from an Usher. If you would like to make your pledge online instead, you can do so by visiting the Give page on the parish website. The goal is to receive most pledges by November 24th. S. Stephen’s is counting on your support and generosity in this period of transition.

My S. Stephen’s Ministry: Molly Ellis – Having grown up attending S. Stephen's, our physical campus is as much a second home to me as any other space in my life. From the nave, the lady chapel, and the tower room to the Great Hall and the Sunday School classrooms, to the choir room and choir stalls where I have spent most of my Sunday mornings for over ten years, the physical elements of our space are very important to me. I joined the Buildings & Grounds Committee upon becoming a Vestry member in order to help steward this venue and ensure that it can be a haven for others the way it has been for me. Right now, we are working on bringing our heating system into the 21st century and planning some improvement projects in the Guild House. It's very satisfying to have an insider's view into the literal nuts and bolts of S. Stephen's physical vessel! If you are interested in getting involved with the B & G Committee, either speak to me after Mass or contact the Committee Chair Tom Bledsoe via email at thomas_bledsoe@brown.edu.

Visit from the new Canon to the Ordinary – Next Sunday, 20 October, the Rev. Canon Dena Cleaver-Bartholomew will be visiting Saint Stephen’s Church and will be leading a parish discussion at the coffee hour after Mass. Please give her a warm welcome and participate in the discussion, as you are able!

Street Closures this Sunday – Some street closures this Sunday may affect your normal route in getting to and from church. Two sections of Atwells Avenue (between Harris Street & Sutton Street and John Partington Way to Dean Street) will be closed at 10 am and will reopen at 3 pm. One section at Atwells Avenue (between Dean Street & Sutton Street) will be closed the entire weekend. Further, street sections at Harris Avenue (between Acorn Street and Eagle Street) and Sims Avenue (at Kingsley Street & Harris Street) will be closed at 8 am and will reopen at 3 pm.

College Ministry – The Episcopal Ministry at Brown and RISD (EMBR) will not be meeting this Sunday, 13 October, as many students have indicated that they will be away for the three-day holiday weekend. We will resume our normal meetings next Sunday. Safe and fun travels to all!

Public Holiday Schedule – On Columbus Day (Monday, 14 October), we will hold Morning Prayer at 9:30 am, with Low Mass following at 10 am.

Saint Luke the Evangelist (October 18th) – a major feast of the church year will be kept this coming Friday with Noonday Prayer at 12 noon, and Low Mass following at 12:10 pm.

Monthly Commemoration of the Departed – whose year’s mind falls during October will be offered Saturday 19 October at 10 am (preceded by Morning Prayer at 9:30 am). If you have any names to add to those to be remembered, please let Nancy Gingrich know. This Mass is sponsored by the Guild of All Souls, St. Stephen Protomartyr Branch: all are welcome and invited to attend!

Altar Flowers – The altar flowers at the high altar today are given to the glory of God and in loving memory of Edward Kennedy Hooks (8 October 2018) for the occasion of his first year’s mind by his wife Leana and family. His absence is felt by so many. May he rest in peace and rise in glory.

My S. Stephen’s Ministry: Leana Hooks – I have been involved in quite a few ministries over the 20+ years I have been attending Saint Stephen’s Church. The most rewarding/challenging experience was helping with the Christmas Pageants in working with all the children and the costumes. I have also served on the Altar Guild for a number of years, and for the first time this year, as a new member of the Vestry. I can be reached via email at leanab3@cox.net.

Blue Heron Concert – This Sunday, 6 October at 4 pm, Blue Heron, Boston’s premier Renaissance choir, will give their 20th Birthday Concert here at S. Stephen’s Church. Blue Heron’s first concerts in October 1999 featured music by Hugh Aston and John Taverner from the Peterhouse partbooks (copied c. 1540 for Canterbury Cathedral) and the Peterhouse repertoire has been a mainstay of their programs ever since. They have released five CDs of the music and the fifth disc won the 2018 Gramophone Classical Music Award for Early Music. Their 20th Birthday concert will feature favorite works from 20 years of Peterhouse programs, chosen on the basis of votes from singers and audience members. Choir Season – begins this Sunday! We welcome back the Schola Cantorum at the 10 am Mass for another program year. The 2019-2020 Liturgical Music Prospectus is available in the Narthex and on the parish website.

Altar Flowers – The altar flowers at the high altar today are given to the glory of God and in thanksgiving for the ministry of James Busby and the Schola Cantorum, from a parishioner.

My S. Stephen’s Ministry: Lynne deBenedette – I cannot recall exactly how many years I have sung in the Schola Cantorum, but that is partly because for me singing in the choir is inseparable from being part of the congregation. It's a humbling honor and enormous privilege to be able contribute to Sunday worship as a choir member, and a joy to sing under James's wonderful direction and with so many talented and dedicated musicians.

My S. Stephen’s Ministry: Andrew Campbell – Hello. My name is Andrew Campbell and my current ministry to S. Stephen’s is as a member of the Investment Committee. Throughout the New Testament (Acts; Gal.; John; Luke; Cor.;), there is reference to the church’s responsibility in managing its finances for the purpose of supporting the material and spiritual needs of Christians and non-Christians. As parishioners, we all give in support of God’s work and to express thanks in response to God’s grace. My role on the Investment Committee is to support you all in this endeavor by safeguarding your investments in the church. I am proud to be given the opportunity to serve as one of your financial stewards. I share with you all the belief in this life, and the life to come after. Choir Season – begins next Sunday! We will welcome back the Schola Cantorum at the 10 am Mass for another program year. Copies of the 2019-2020 Liturgical Music Prospectus will be mailed out this week and will be made available in the Narthex and on the Parish website.

The Birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary (September 8th) – a major feast of the church year, is transferred to Monday, 9th September, with Evening Prayer at 5:30 pm, and Low Mass following at 6 pm.

Holy Cross Day (September 14th) – a major feast of the church year will be kept this coming Saturday with Morning Prayer at 9:30 am, and Low Mass following at 10 am.

Stewardship Program – It’s that time of year again! If you are on our mailing list, you should have received an invitation to make your pledge of financial contributions to S. Stephen’s for 2020, along with a pledge card. If you would like to make your pledge online instead, you can do so by visiting the Give page on the parish website. The goal is to receive most pledges by November 24th. In the meantime, please consider prayerfully what you can offer; S. Stephen’s is counting on your support and generosity in this period of transition.

College Ministry – Welcome to all new and returning students! The Episcopal Ministry at Brown and RISD (EMBR) kicks off this Sunday, 8 September, with Evening Prayer at 5:30 and dinner and conversation to follow. All undergraduate and graduate students are welcome and invited to attend.

Volunteer for Acolyte Rota – S. Stephen’s has a need for some additional volunteers, aged anywhere from 9 to 99, who would like to be trained to serve as acolytes for the 10:00 am Mass on Sundays and for special services throughout the year. Please speak to Richard Noble, who can arrange for training. Thank you!

Altar Flower Offerings – Please consider making an offering of flowers to help beautify our worship of God in memory of a loved one or in celebration of a special event. Arrangements in the church’s brass vases cost $25 each, for a total of $50. Call or email the office to make the arrangements.

Final Sunday of Bible Study – Please consider this last opportunity to join Fr. Mead and others from the parish with an informative and entertaining study focusing on the Acts of the Apostles. The group meets for the final time this Sunday in the library from 9 until 9:45 am. Thank you to all who have participated!
