An Advent Choral Service – Join us next Sunday 18 December at 5:30 pm for an Advent Choral Service:The Great O Antiphons. The Schola Cantorum, under the direction of James Busby, will sing The Great O Antiphons, H 36 – 43 and Magnificat, H. 74 of Marc-Antoine Charpentier. They will be joined by the St. Dunstan Consort, Dana Maiben, leader. The Great O Antiphons are seven brief prayers that are traditionally chanted or sung on successive evenings starting on December 17. These ancient supplications form the basis of the popular Advent hymn O come, o come Emmanuel.

Parish Development Weekend and Stewardship Sunday – This coming weekend, November 18 through 20, will feature three fun activities related to our Parish Development program. This Sunday, the Feast of Pentecost, the Schola Cantorum will perform the Missa Luba at the 10am Mass. Arranged in 1958 by Belgian Missionary Fr. Guido Haazen, Missa Luba sets the Latin texts of the Ordinary of the Mass -- Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus, and Agnus Dei -- to Congolese rhythms and harmonies. This hauntingly beautiful African Mass setting reminds us that the Gospel -- and indeed the Church's liturgy -- is for all nations and peoples of the earth, a message particularly appropriate for Whitsunday.

The last of the Lenten Stations of the Cross will be held this coming Friday, April 15, following the 5:30 Mass. On Good Friday, April 22, the church will offer Reverse Stations in the form of Maria Desolata, at 5:30 pm.

If you would like to make a flower offering at Easter, in thanksgiving or in memoriam, please fill out the special envelope enclosed in next Sunday's Kalendar and drop it in the offering plate or return it to the parish office no later than Monday, April 18.

Trays of sweets are needed for the library reception following the Easter Vigil. If you are willing to prepare something, please contact Cory MacLean or Phoebe Pettingell.

Bring your bells to Maundy Thursday and Easter Vigil. Traditionally, bells are rung at the beginning of the Gloria in excelsis. If you have a bell at home, please bring it and join in.

This feast commemorates the visit of the Blessed Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph to Jerusalem to present the infant Jesus in the Temple and to offer the required sacrifices on the fortieth day after his birth. This celebration rounds out the cycle of feasts that follow the Lord's Nativity on December 25. It is also the traditional time of blessing the parish's supply of candles for the coming year. Come participate in the singing of the Vespers psalmody and responses, and the Ordinary of the Mass, as we celebrate this wonderful feast of the Church calendar.

Children of S. Stephen's come take part in our annual pageant. You can bring a friend. All children and youth, ages 3 through high school, are welcome to play music, sing, direct, do props and play angels, shepherds, kings and, well, you know the cast. Together we will tell the Nativity story during the Christmas Eve children's service which begins at 5:30 pm. Grown-ups are needed too. Two major rehearsals are held the last Saturday in Advent (December 18, 10 am-noon) and on Christmas Eve at 4 pm. Advent Quiet Day will be held Saturday 4 December with addresses by Douglas LeBlanc. We will begin with Morning Prayer at 9 am, followed by Mass at 9:30 and breakfast at 10. Meditations begin at 10:30 and the day concludes at 1 pm. Doug LeBlanc, known as one of the finest reporters in the Anglican Communion, has written about religion over the last two decades and is currently Editor at Large for The Living Church. His recent book, Tithing: Test Me InThis is part of "The Ancient Practices" series, with a forward by Phyllis Tickle. Eleven Christians of various denominations, liberal and conservative, and one Rabbi, open up to LeBlanc, sharing their stories of trusting God not only with their faith but with their money. Guild of All Souls

The Guild of All Souls will meet on Saturday, 13 November at 11 am at St. John's Newport. The American Branch of the Guild of All Souls will offer a Requiem Mass, followed by the annual Guild Meeting.

Another wonderful slideshow from Karen Vorbeck. These pictures were taken on Saturday 9 October. The pilgrims started at the Anglican parish church, where Fr. Alfred Hope Patten -- who re-established the modern devotion to Our Lady of Walsingham -- was vicar from 1921 until his death in 1958. From there we walked the winding country lane to the Slipper Chapel, where in ancient times pilgrims would remove their shoes before walking the final mile to Walsingham. The restored Slipper Chapel is now the site of the Roman Catholic national shrine. The slideshow concludes with some photos of the Anglican shrine back in the village.

‘What is Truth?’ – The Passion of S. John: Music and Interpretation

The story of the Passion of Our Lord as recorded in S. John’s Gospel has shaped the faith and identity of generations of Christians. Its richness lends itself to a variety of interpretations. Inspired by the power of the story, many composers have set the Passion to music. In their interpretations, these composers reveal their own understanding of what this text means to them. And through our responses to their music, we better understand our own preconceptions and interpretations of this foundational Christian story. By reflecting on the way that the Passion has been set to music, we hope to enter more deeply into its meaning.

All reflections will be held on Sunday evenings in Lent from 7 to 8pm in the Great Hall.
