Jesus and Zacchaeus
(Medieval painting, provenance & location unknown)

FROM THE RECTOR

This Sunday's Gospel features the wonderful story of Zacchaeus, a Chief Tax Collector of Jericho, who climbs a sycamore tree to see Jesus over the crowds. What sycamore trees are we willing to climb to see Jesus?

The Martyrdom of Saint James
The Master of the Winkler Epitaph, c. 1480

FROM THE RECTOR

Saint James of Jerusalem was a close relative of the Lord (in New Testament Greek adelphos can mean either "brother" or "kinsman") and the first bishop of Jerusalem. He may or may not be identical with the Apostle known as James the son of Alphaeus or "James the Less." He is mentioned in several places in the New Testament as a prominent leader of the apostolic Church, and the Epistle of James is attributed to his authorship.

When a Major Feast falls on a Sunday it is normally transferred to the first open day in the week, but the Prayer Book gives us permission to make an exception to this rule by substituting "the Collect, Preface, and one or more of the Lessons appointed for the Feast ... for those of the Sunday" (p. 16). We are happy to take advantage of this opportunity for Sunday observance of Saints Days that might otherwise never come to the attention of the majority of our congregation.

The 10 am Mass features as the Anthem "A Trope for Saint James" composed by our good friend Daryl Bichel. So please come and join in the celebration this Sunday of the Feast of Saint James of Jerusalem.
-- Fr. John D. Alexander

Jacob Wrestles with the Angel

FROM THE RECTOR

This week's Gospel reading concludes with the question: "Nevertheless, when the Son of man comes, will he find faith on earth?" (Luke 18:8) It might be said that the Church's mission is to conduct its life and worship so that an affirmative answer may be given to that question. The same Gospel reading begins with Jesus telling his disciples that they "ought always to pray and not lose heart" (Luke 18:1). By our decision every week to persevere in coming to Mass, saying our prayers, and living the Christian life, the Church gradually builds up the answer to the question: "when the Son of man comes, will he find faith on earth?"

Cleansing of the Ten Lepers, Illuminated Manuscript

FROM THE RECTOR

The motivation of Christian worship is gratitude and thanksgiving to God: "for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all for thine inestimable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ, for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory" (BCP p. 58). It's not primarily about what we get out of it -- although the paradox is that when we approach worship seeking not to fulfill our own needs but rather to offer God the praise and thanks that is his due, we are almost always blessed in unexpected and overwhelming ways. This week's Gospel reading from Luke features a Samaritan leper who, alone out of ten who were healed, returned to render thanks to Jesus. His example teaches us much of the nature of authentic Christian worship. -- Fr. John D. Alexander
